What is cellulose acetate plastics?
Traditional Cellulose Acetate plastics are manufactured by compounding CA flakes with phthalate plasticizer. CA plastics are characterized with high transparency, high chemical resistance, balance of impact & toughness, and easily coloured glossy materials. It has been widely accepted for more than 100 years in many applications and consumer products, such as ophthalmic frames, jewelries, watch cases and tool handles.
Unlike other commonly found 100% synthetic polymers, our cellulose acetates are produced by chemical modifications of naturally sourced cellulosic wood pulps; therefore, they are considered biodegradable and environmental friendly materials.
What is Bio Acetate?
Bio Acetate is essentially the same as traditional Cellulose Acetates, except the use of non-phthalate plasticizer. The biobased content of EcoPlant S70 is 62%. Natural sourced Bio Acetates are more “skin-friendly” and much less prone to skin allergies. Moreover, there will not be plasticizer migration from the acetate plastics to polycarbonate lens to cause the so called “crazing” as in traditional CA.
EcoPlant S70 Bio Acetate
It is a drop-in replacement of traditional CA. Our S70 keeps the properties of traditional CA. The main difference is that our S70 is 98% biodegradable and has a 62% biobase content.
Similar to traditional CA, it can be injection moulded, extruded or pressed to make sheets. This makes S70 very applicable to all kinds of eyewear. The secondary fabrication methods are also essentially the same as well. Therefore, moulders and fabricators can use the same machinery and equipment, and do not need to change processing parameters.
